For our first home League fixture of the new season we played Alford & District at Home. The game started well, with Nomads showing signs of dominance from the off and some lovely hockey displayed, through text-book triangular passing from midfield up to the newly recruited Kathy Cox up front. A beautifully executed set short corner routine saw Nomads go 1-nil up within the first ten minutes, thanks to Maria Pylas, Flip Toley and Kate Westgate.
Nomads continued to exert pressure, although Alford looked menacing during a couple of breaks and had to be kept at bay with some fine defending from Rachel ‘Right On it’ Gooch and Anna ‘Watch it’ Withington. 20 minutes in and Alford equalized – again from a break in free play, ending in a goal slotted away just behind Jenny Corish. Nomads rallied on, feeling the pressure to score and come away with a home victory.
The second half saw Nomads taking the majority of possession, with several short corners and some handsome team play, although Alford were still very much in the game and continued to pose a threat, keeping Nomads defence firmly on their toes. Unfortunately the home team was unable to finish, despite several opportunities and the score remained 1-1 at full time.
Player of the match this week went to skipper Liz Freeman for those fancy new shoes! (Editor comment - and for playing a bit of hockey too...!)
We look forward to building on what was considered a good first game and taking on Cambridge University away for our second match.
