3 wins to round out 2024, and another one to start 2025 thanks to a resilient and disciplined defence coupled with clinical counter attacks.
Both teams had their chances in the first half; we hit the post with the best of ours, while Dan kept Peterborough out with a series of saves.
Eventually we got the breakthrough with a penalty corner goal straight off the training ground. Left slip > back post > Mel deflection between post man and goalie. Unfortunately Peterborough hit back immediately with an identical goal from a penalty corner of their own. Imitation, flattery, and all that.
Half time brought a lot of discussion about where we were vulnerable - namely out wide leaving ourselves open to 2 v 1s - and after the break we managed to shut down Peterborough’s attacks from wide.
Not long into the half we re-established our lead when Sam’s quick thinking from a free hit caught the Peterborough defence napping, and Will E deflected the ball past the keeper. Once again, though, Peterborough came straight back at us, nicking the ball from our 16 to draw level.
The winner came thanks to an end-to-end move: from Dan hoovering up outside the circle, to George down the right side, then Arthur driving along the baseline and pulling it back, Murray touching it past a defender, and Mel turning the ball home at the back post.
We held on for the last 10 minutes without any real scares to take the 3 points back to Cambridge.
MoM: Mel - 2 goals from the man who’s often in the right place at the right time
DoD: Will E - Stopped a Peterborough counter attack as we held on and earned a yellow card for his troubles
