Nomads travelled across the rain soaked Fens to take on Spalding this Saturday, gratefully accompanied by Sarah Farrell and Natalie Cook, who had already played their own Twos game earlier in the day. Spalding proved a strong opposition, with plenty of substitutes, something that Nomads could not benefit from this weekend. From the off, the home team bombarded the visitors defence but could not find a way past the determined Nomads back four of Anna Withington, Helen Paterson, Kate Westgate and Linsey Porter.
Nomads had a couple of opportunities to take the lead when Lily Matthews collected a nice through ball from Sarah Farrell, and Maria Pylas found the Spalding D, but unfortunately could not quite convert. Spalding took the lead after a well drilled short corner routine saw them go 1-nil up, and despite Nomads efforts, a break lead to the home teams second goal before the half time whistle.
A quick change of formation at half time saw Nomads come out with renewed determination and saw some excellent flowing passes between Liz Freeman, Kate Westgate and Flip Toley and finally the visitors started to penetrate the Spalding back line. Spalding continued to pound the Nomads defence in the second half, it was all the visitors could do to clear the ball away before the home team swarmed forward again. A final goal from the Home side saw the final whistle end the game at 3-nil to Spalding. A battered, bruised and damp Nomads team exited the pitch with heads held high after putting on a sterling effort given the circumstances. Player of the Match sympathy vote went to captain Liz Freeman for a nice black eye (editor’s note: and for showing 100% commitment; putting everything on the line for her team)!
Next week the team play Peterborough 2 at home.
