This week we travelled to the remote shire of Lincoln, to our most distant fixture in Long Sutton. Siri decided to take us through the scenic route through the fenlands; and whilst skip and Jez debated whether this was the correct route the rest of the team was stuck in traffic around Wisbech.
Long Sutton had been fielding stronger sides at home, compared to their away matches. So we pushed back with some restrain (and the fact that some players only arrived 5 mins before pb). Long Sutton were quickly on their front foot and created a few options. They gave us the best 10 mins of the match to start with, putting us under pressure and connecting their passes to reach our D. Our defence line held nicely and they did not generate a single shot on goal.
After that, the opposition literally collapsed. Either they ran out of steam or we finally warmed up, but from the on it was one way traffic for the rest of the match. Goals started falling left, right, and centre, from short corners, long corners, open play, and the rest. By half time we were 5-0 up, our forwards running circles around them and the midfield winning balls not far from their 23. Goals scored by Ollie, Angus, Zinny, Mike, and Arthur.
In the second half the opposition recovered their breadth for about 3 minutes, and then re-collapsed. We had open play wherever we wanted to go. Mike Tuft had great lead runs on the right channel and deep to the back line, keeping the opposition stretched. More goals ensued from Arthur, Ollie, and Mike. We even had time to trial some short-corner set pieces, even featuring a double castle. And a few minutes before the end skip put the cherry on the cake with a scorcher taken from open play near the left hand side of the top D to blast the ball at chest height by the far post.
