Nomads Twos entertained far away Rutland Ones at Coldhams - a team that we are familiar with - not the individuals themselves, but their style of play: youthful, skilful, but tend to lose their composure when play turns against them.
Our play in the first 15 minutes lacked bite - we were off the pace in our enthusiasm. Tragedy struck in our defence when Dave Spence streaked back to cover a Rutland break. Ultimately, the ball was cleared, but when the smoke cleared Dave was found prostrate on the ground just in front of the goal, with a hamstring injury and had to be assisted off the pitch – not to make an appearance again.
Rutland had scored two - their second goal was well worked and well finished. Seth needs special mention for deftly knocking down a rising ball that was heading for the back of the net.
At the break, our strategic guru, Doc, directed some formational modifications. In the second half, Nomads dug in and produced some great hockey. Ollie sneaked a goal from drag flick short corner routine which their goalie frankly muffed. Pete Atkin's second goal was a classic - a deflection through the keeper's legs from a ball drilled into the D.
There were anxious minutes at the end of the match as Rutland tried to deliver the knockout blow, but squandered the chances that they generated.
In the end, Nomads finished with a point - a result which doesn't change our position, but did boost our confidence and made the beer taste delicious on Saturday evening
