Bishops Stortford moved into second in Div 1 as Adam Bassingthwaighte’s first half strike gave them a 1-0 win over Cambridge Nomads at Stamford Bridge.
Stortford finally broke down a stubborn Nomads side as Bassingthwaighte struck a fierce low effort after being fed from a short corner on the right of the box, though Nomads felt they should have been awarded a foul on Joe Linton in the build up.
Though the first half was not short on action in each final third, clear opportunities were hard to come by. Nomads used their pace in Jack Franklin, James Tee and Martin Hamon to create a few issues for Stortford, but David Butcher had few shots to save despite the visitors registering just 30 per cent possession.
Newcastle boss Steve Bruce: “Five points from the first five is not breathtakingly good, but we'll move on from there.”
