In Nomads' first league game of the season, the Second team hosted Peterborough 6th team at Coldhams Common. The light, unanticipated rain fell on the team as they gathered to watch the First XI come back from a two goal deficit to secure a draw. By the time the team took to the pitch, the weather was perfect for hockey. The mood was optimistic, as a formidible team had assembled, more formidable that has played for the Twos for some time.
Both sides started with some typical start-of-season scrappy hockey, with Nomads initially making some sustained forrays into the opposition's D. At the other end, however, a defensive mix up gifted Peterborough an easy goal.
Gradually, as the team got to know each other and began to feel a little more comfortable with the formation, our play improved throughout the game. When Nomads combined swift accurate passing, our play sliced through Peterborough defences. Martin, Arthur & Sam combined on the right hand side for Sam to slot a nice ball from the back line to the P spot where Jack elegantly dinked the ball from behind him into the back of the net. Nomads went into the break at 1-1.
In the second half, Nomads continued to improve, again swift passing and interlinking play created the opportunities. Guest Dan Jarivs tested the very competent Boro' goal with a drag flick short corner routines and lashed a great strike from the right hand side - the oppo goal tender was fortunate that he was in the right place as he made no response to the rising ball and it was deflect over the top corner.
Opportunities were created by both sides, but Peterborough managed to convert two - one from a weak short corner routine which should have been broken down and the other was from a fast break which Nomads, on another day, would have snuffed out without concern.
There was much to pleased about from the first game of the season and heralds well for the season. Dan Ravenscroft will be sorely missed as he heads off to University. Best wishes, Dan!
