Oh, momentous day - the first (genuine) victory this season, nay, in two years of hockey in 3 North West - and how sweet did it taste!!
In a rescheduled fixture from mid January, Nomads hosted Ely at Coldhams. The team was buoyed by an elegant 6-2 victory from Nomads first team and by the presence of Nomads occasionals such as George Bucknall, Rory Catchpole, Doug Buisson and new talent, Mike Middleton.
Nomads started the game off the pace and were soon 2-0 down. Following an earnest exhortation by Dave Spence at the back, Nomads recovered the deficit to level the match. Jack Hallworth scored Nomads' first goal with an incredible lash from the top of the D into the roof of the net above the keeper's head - beauty - and cheered by much of the first team who had remained on the side line - goal of the season!
Ely took two more goals to leave the score at half time to be 4-2.
As history has proved, Nomads showed their strength in the second half: putting together some great hockey in the middle of the park, backed by some stern defence. Described by spectator, Joe Broadbent, as 'nail biting', Nomads clawed their way back into the match and went 7-5 up, before Ely pulled one back, but Nomads held on to secure a famous 7-6 victory.
Goalie, John Stephenson, who had already secured a victory with the first team was almost incredulously bereft of words having won a second time in one day!
Goal scorers: Jack Hallworth x 2, Dan Jarvis x 2, George Bucknall x 2 and Arthur Meadows.
