Nomads braced themselves for a journey to Skegness to meet Alford & District, our most 'exotic' fixture in this league. (Inevitably, Spense's car, filled with eagerness and schoolboy hunger deviated into a McDonald's en route!) The weather was remarkably gentile and not bracing whatsoever, indeed a bright sun low in the sky made discerning one team from another tricky for a while in the first half.
Yes, remarkably Nomads were ahead for 10 minutes or so, as a result of some slick passing around our opponent's 23m line, which led to a 1-2 between Arthur and Ben in the D with Arthur tapping in from 3 yards (very satisfying!). Sadly, Dave Spense pulled out with a recurrence of last week's hamstring injury.
Alford recovered and scored two by half time. After the turn around, Alford started throwing long aerial balls over our defense (or sometimes into our defense with questionably legality) which proved 'troublesome' when coupled with some good finishing.
That's not to say that Nomads didn't have opportunities at the other end - particularly with a lovely short corner routine.
Sadly, we left Skeggie adrift by 5 goals for a looong drive home. Many thanks to our chauffeurs: Dave, John and Tim.
