Another lovely autumnal afternoon at Coldhams - how many more will there be? With last week's glorious victory still fresh in our minds, the Twos hopes to slay another league leader.
The match started evenly - Wisbech were a competent side, but we had already demonstrated that we could beat sides such as this. Angus was given the ball on his reverse stick side outside the circle, surrounded by red sticks. Somehow he managed to wriggle across into the middle pitch and then proceed uncontested into the D. He cracked off a shot and was delighted to see it speed under the advancing goalie.
Wisbech scored from a maneuver that started from a turnover in their own D. :(
Paul proceeded to miss an opportunity in front of the goal with keeper prostrate on the ground with an open net behind him. The Longson supporters were wailing, "Oh Dear"!
This was always going to be passionate encounter - and so it proved. There was a flurry of cards being shown: Nomads went down to 10 men and Wisbech to 9, but neither side managed to capitalise on these advantages. 1-1 at half time.
Wisbech open up the second half with a goal.
Paul clattered in a straight strike from a shortie - nice one! Jez puts in an extraordinary long-range tackle which earns him some spectator time.
Nomads short corner is kept out by a Wiz foot (I think!). STROKE! Paul calmly slots it away into the left netting.
Wisbech pressure in midfield squeezes the ball out of Nomads procession and their forward line evades a series of nearly tackles to eventually find a man on the back post to score. 3-3
Then controversially Wisbech score again to lead 4-3.
Arthur draws a mob of Wisbech sticks and then slips to Paul unnoticed at the top of the D for a free strike from - but sadly it's lashed into the roof of the side netting. Oh Dear, again!
Another Nomads short corner sees Sugi shoveling the ball into the back of the net, but a stroke had been awarded half a second before for more Wisbech footwork on the goal-line. Once again, Paul converted, this time high on the right hand side. See the video!
With the clock running down, it would seem that this passionate game was heading for a draw, but the final minutes turned into a frenzy of speedy play. Wisbech threw everything into a big attack with their striker stabbing the ball through John's legs at close range.
The final was 4-5 - quite a ding-dong - we could feel unlucky not to walk off Coldhams Common with some points at the end. There was great hockey play, marred by some short tempers. No doubt about the man of the match though: Paul - and a shame his hat-trick wasn't enough to win the game.
