City started the game as league leaders, so we knew that this was going to be a tough game, particularly as their squad numbered 15 - and so it proved. The first 15 minutes saw continuous pressure on the Nomads defence, but our back five men were resolute - no real chances were granted.
The final 20 minutes of the first half saw lots of Nomadic possession in City’s territory. Matthew had some lovely touches to set up threatening play. Max worked tirelessly at right midfield, particularly when chasing down the opposition and tackling back.
Just before half time, City converted a short corner with a well-rehearsed manoeuvre with a deflection at the right post.
The second half, again, had patches of excellent play. Rich Mackie was proving to be handful for the City defence in the middle of the
pitch – never happier than when surrounded by 3 or more City sticks, but still had total control of the ball!
Tom marked City's stick wizard and certainly squared up to him well. City’s second and final goal came from a break down the right which found their captain on the P spot with his back to goal. He faked a turn to his reverse stick side and he slotted just underneath John's elbow, just as he was going to ground.
In conclusion, Nomads all played to a very high standard (umpiring was excellent too – hat tip to Moots and University umpire who guested for us!) and despite the bitterness of losing against our old foe, Nomads put in a fine performance, even though they came second. We hope for better pickings when we play Wisbech next week!
