Massive thanks to our umpires, Pete Jarvis & Dan Stevenson for playing for the Threes at Royston and then scooting back to Coldhams to umpire the Twos. Bourne Deeping themselves were stuck on the A14 which meant that we were waiting for our opposition after our umpires arrived.
In general, the game was a scrappy affair - Nomads' usual quality was stuttering. In the first half, Bourne Deeping scored twice - their second goal was a short corner that their right post man batted down from 7 foot high into the goal. Nomads' only goal in the first half came from a fast break / turn over in midfield, finding Angus wide left on the back line. He marched valiantly towards the Bourne Deeping goal. Despite some crunching defenders' tackles, Angus elegantly slipped to Rich Mackie on the P spot to slap the ball against the backboards.
After the turnaround, Nomads had periods where they demonstrated their traditional composure and John put in some excellent saves in the Nomads goal. Bourne Deeping had a short corner. Jez stopped the ball as the last man, but the umpire (rightly) deemed that the ball had just crossed over the line. This situation remained until the last 10 minutes and then Nomads won a short corner. Rich Morgan injected, Tom stopped, Arthur slipped it to Angus on his left who fired in. The shot was parried and improperly cleared. The ball fell to Arthur who slapped into the roof of the net.
Increasingly Nomads stitched together their traditional play against their opposition who were tiring. Nomads' final goal came from Rich Mackie finding a little space at the top of the D and flicked the ball goalwards through a melee of players. With perfect accuracy, there was a satisfying zizzing sound as the ball found the side netting inches inside the post, just above the backboards. Rich's three week-old daughter, Abigail, snuggled up in her pushchair, failed to stir at daddy's momentous score, unlike fellow Nomads!
So, the final score was 3-3. As a final note, Matthew said that he couldn't go to the pub afterwards, as he was attending a film festival. So now we know why he has been recording matches - we anticipate silverware and red carpet invitations and enthusiastic, adoring fans next week! (10am PB at Boro for those that need to know!)
