Kettering are recent imports into the East Leagues from the Midlands and their results to date had already demonstrated that they could score goals but also leak some too.
A clash in colours meant that Nomads, as the visitors, had to don some netball shirts. Lookin' good - as you can tell!
Kettering came out of the traps keen and were competent throwing aerials around. Largely Nomads' defence remained resolute to these threats. For example, Nomads' debutante, Archie, competently picked one out the sky.
Nomads scored first - tbh against the run of the opening 10 minutes: Ruben passed to Arthur just inside the D. His cross was cut out by the goal keeper, but Matthew was on hand to pounce on the loose ball and slot in.
Kettering scored two before half time - their first was a result of an awesome short corner routine that was worthy of a National League side. Their second resulted from (unfortunately) a break down of our own short corner routine, which generated a fast break against us which overloaded our defence.
In the second half, Nomads levelled as a result of a heavy push in Will's back just on the P spot and the umpire signalled a flick. Spence put the ball away underneath the keeper's right hand.
Once again, Nomads led. This time Arthur shanked a straight strike short corner routine. No problem - Matthew was streaking in on the right post and mid-air angled a beautiful glancing deflection into the corner. Goals like that simply can't be rehearsed!
Sterling Nomadic defence continued - John making some critical saves, but by this stage, Nomads were suffering: cards were flying and various Nomadic gentlemen were permitted to take several minutes' refreshment & observation from the side line (Jez, Tim, Will). Aches and strains started to show (hamstrings from Tim & Angus and cramp from Max). Oh for some subs!!
Kettering equalised for a third time, their venomous short corner flick + deflection showed that their team had some talent that had played at far higher levels in the past.
Kettering squeaked another fast break goal, once again punishing Nomads' midfield for over-enthusiastically committing to an attack, thereby denying an epic 3-3 draw. Sigh, but no shame - it really was a tremendous Twos' performance against a side that will threatening the leaders in this league.
