Hills Road astro was laid down only 6 weeks ago. Fortunately, we had Ben who had already played on the surface who reported it to be bouncy. And so it proved - the novel surface dented Nomads confidence and gave them an unsettled air in the first 25 mins or so. Our usually competent and patient grace at the back - a point frequently mentioned in these reports - wasn't perfectly firing and we couldn't quite slot together passes in the middle and up front.
Second to bottom South looked more competent than their League position would indicate (their firsts did have a win away at Long Sutton). They were more at ease and scored their first after a goal mouth scramble.
By half time, we had the merit of the surface. South scored from a turnover in their half that turned into a fast break. Once in the D, the initial shot was parried, but they moved the ball around the D and slotted home in a well executed procedure.
In the final 10 minutes, a long corner hit-in was passed to Paul on the South's back line. He beat one player and passed to Arthur who got away a weak flick. The keeper scuffed the ball into the back of the net and thereby salvaged some Nomadic pride. The count down to the whistle saw passionate Nomads play as they worked hard to close the gap, but it wasn't to be.
