Nomads started their 2014 season with some excellent hockey on a grey day at Coldhams. Peterborough 7s side were not as anticipated – a mixture of old hands and young legs. Instead, they were an experienced crew, indicative of Peterborough growing as a club.
With a solid defense of guest goalie, Marcus, plus Carl, Barry, Mikey, Rich Morgan allowed the midfield of Dan R, Arthur, new recruit Ciaran and Ellis to surge forward. Strikers Alex, Matthew and Sam kept the opposing defense on their toes.
The match was evenly balanced. Nomads took an early lead when Arthur’s cross fell to Alex at the top of the D who drilled it at the goal. The shot wasn’t cleared by a 'Borough defender and Sam on the back post to execute a Walsh special into the backboards - as seen in this video - thanks to Matthew.
After half time, Nomads suffered an unfortunate deflection from a deflection which saw the ball ping off Barry stick at close range into the net. A lovely Nomads manoeuvre starting with Ellis to Matthew on the 25 yard line found Sam in the D who committed the goal keeper. Ellis can be rightly rueful at missing an open opportunity from a couple of yards. Thankfully, he will be able to benefit from the video recording of the incident – thanks to Matthew again.
The score remained at 1-1 with Nomads attacking with great, spirited hockey. Peterborough sneaked a goal with minutes to play when a ball whizzed into the D. A youthful P’bra attacker got an elegant deflection to send it past Marcus. Despite Nomads surges, we were unable to overcome the deficit, but it was an excellent team performance.
